Pope Francis interrupted his weekly audience with the faithful on Wednesday to answer a phone call, leaving people in St. Peter’s Square waiting for more than a minute.
An aide handed the pontiff a cell phone and motioned for a man who should come to the podium to wait.
During the break, the only sound from the Vatican broadcast of the event was seagulls flying overhead as cameras shifted focus from the pope to the crowd.
The Vatican press office, which does not normally comment on Francis’ private conversations, did not respond to questions about the phone call.
While the 86-year-old pope has criticized cellphones in the past and warned Catholics not to become addicted to their devices, similar incidents have happened before.
In 2021, on at least two occasions, Francis excused himself to answer a phone call at the end of a general audience, when clergy lined up to greet him.
