F1: Emilia Romagna Grand Prix canceled after thunderstorms in the region

The sixth race of the 2023 Formula 1 season at the Imola circuit has been suspended

The severe storm that is ravaging the Emilia Romagna region of Italy has caused Formula 1 management to cancel the sixth race of the season, which was to take place this weekend, at the Imola circuit. The area has been affected by flooding since early May and the rains intensified earlier this week.

The note issued by F1 does not announce a new date for the traditional circuit, it merely underlines that the event will not be held this weekend.

Even on Tuesday, when there were already several employees preparing for the GP, the racetrack had to be evacuated on the decision of the Civil Protection of the region, which had classified Imola under the red flag. That is, the order was for people to go home and not circulate on the streets, due to the high risk of rivers overflowing and flooding of the streets.

Amid the red alert, the Italian authorities have begun to ask for the race to be canceled or postponed, as have Transport Minister and Vice President Matteo Salvini. The track itself has flood spots at the moment

– It is not possible to organize the event in a safe way for the fans, the teams and our employees, and it is the right thing to do given the situation cities and towns are facing. It would not be fair to put more pressure on local authorities and emergency services at this difficult time,” Formula 1 said.
