Bolsonaro’s allies fear further damage to his image after investigations into Cid messages

The fear is that new conversations will surface that end up embarrassing the former president

The investigation against the lieutenant colonel and former assistant of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Mauro Cid, has aroused fear in the former president’s allies. According to Folha de São Paulothe fear is that breaking the secrecy of the messages exchanged by the suspect will create embarrassment and further damage the political image of the former chief executive.

The violations that exposed the details of the presidential office were determined by the minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, such as the possible resignation of Paulo Guedes, former minister of the economy, due to the increase in the price of diesel in 2021 and daily affairs of the presidency.

Furthermore, there was also the revelation that Cid received coup messages from people close to the former president. This raises the possibility that new negotiations will emerge on the matter, as the PF may have had access to conversations held during the election period and shortly after the defeat of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

As the report underlines, with access to the conversations of the CID, the PF obtained the authorization to violate the banking, telematic and fiscal secrecy of 13 other people, and of a company, including three Bolsonaro advisers and two advisers of Michelle, the former first lady.

The extent of these breaches of secrecy has been questioned by Bolsonaro’s interlocutors, who complained about the investigators’ access to conversations, calling the act a “fishing expedition,” or trial fishing. That is, when investigators scour a person’s private life without a specific objective, only trying to identify facts that can be used against him in the future.

Always second SheetBolsonaro’s attrition process occurred, as former advisers pointed out, at the same time that he faces a case in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), which could lead to the politician’s ineligibility.

This move by Moraes in the investigation against Bolsonaro is not seen favorably in the STF, and ends up receiving criticism, even when compared to Operation Lava Jata, which was largely quashed by the Supreme Court itself.
