The goal is to hold early general elections in the country.
The president of Ecuador, the conservative Guillermo Lasso, has signed a decree dissolving the National Assembly, where an impeachment process against him was underway.
This tool is known as “cross-death”, as it leads to the calling of early general elections in the country.
“This is the best decision to provide a constitutional solution to the political crisis Ecuador is facing and to give back to the people the power to decide their own future,” Lasso said on national TV and radio.
According to the president, the anticipation of the elections “will allow the government to promote changes in the public administration that have been prevented by the opposition in Parliament”.
“From today the government will issue a series of decrees, in accordance with the mandate expressed by the people”, promised Lasso, disapproved by 80% of the population.
The conservative’s mandate was only set to expire in 2025, but he became the target of an impeachment trial on suspicion of knowing and permitting wrongdoings between the state-owned Flota Petrolera Ecuatoriana (Flopec) and the private company Amazonas Tanker.
However, with the opposition-controlled National Assembly, the trial also cited several problems plaguing the country, such as insecurity, unemployment and rising cost of living.
