Does Donkey “Toretto” Kong deserve his own movie?
Donkey Kong and Super Mario have always been linked in video games since the mythical Italian plumber made his debut on consoles as a secondary to the arcade of the iconic gorilla. Yes, a few years before ‘Super Mario Bros’, he starred in his own video game. Therefore, the appearance of Kong in the animated film that has broken all records for highest-grossing films based on a video game and that, for the moment, leads the box office in 2023: ‘Super Mario Bros: The movie’.
Given that the ape has his own line of video games with the Donkey Kong Country series, it’s not unreasonable that Illumination could give the character a ball and grant him his own spin-off movie with the entire Kong family involved. Seth Rogen himself, the actor who voices the gorilla, is enthusiastic about the idea:
“There are a lot of opportunities there,” Rogen told Collider. “I think the Kongs could have their own movie, and if the ‘Fast and Furious’ saga has taught us anything [es] it’s all about family“.
Really, the two franchises wouldn’t be that different. One would be a high-octane movie with action, racing and family… And the other, ‘Fast and Furious’. ‘Super Mario Bros: The Movie’ features the patriarch cranky kong by Fred Armisen, but there are many more Kongs throughout the video games that would be interesting to see on screen. In addition to Donkey Kong and his grandfather (or father in Donkey Kong 64) Cranky, there is also DK’s faithful little friend, Diddy Kongalong with the sisters Dixie and Tiny Kongthe ultra strong Chunky Konghis brother Kiddy Kongand lanky kong. That’s not to mention other Kong friends like the fabulous Funky Kong and swanky kong or DK’s girlfriend, candy kong. Much like Dom Toretto’s (Vin Diesel), they would all bring their own strengths to the table, making them a formidable force whenever they work together.
But of course, what about the cars? If you have seen ‘Super Mario Bros: The Movie’ you will have verified that Another thing they have in common with the ‘Fast and Furious’ characters is a love of racing.. The Kongs are passionate about go-karts and their city is basically a race track. Rogen agreed: “Exactly! They have those karts. They have a lot in common!“.
Can you imagine a spin-off of the video game ‘Mario Kart’ starring Donkey Kong and drinking from the style of the ‘Fast and Furious’ saga, instead of ‘Super Mario Bros 2’? Although the question, in reality, should be…Why aren’t they doing it NOW??
