The Flower Moon Killers: ‘Special’, ‘Phenomenal DiCaprio’…Skin Fires for ‘One of Scorsese’s Best’

Out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese’s new film Killers of the Flower Moon is one of the highlights of the 76th edition. This 3h26 western is inspired by real events and adapted from David Grann’s book of the same name, published in 2017, which recounts the murders of the native Osage tribe.

It reunites Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, two of Martin Scorsese’s favorite actors, along with Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow.

This Saturday, May 20, after an even more glamorous red carpet, Killers of the Flower Moon was screened in front of moviegoers and movie professionals alike who were eagerly awaiting the film.

First thoughts on Scorsese’s new film

The entire film crew – and led by Martin Scorsese – were met with thunderous applause at the Grand Théâtre Lumiere after arriving late, which meant the show started 45 minutes late.

And after 3 hours of the movie, the verdict came down. And the reviews are hilarious reviews of Killers of the Flower Moon. The Cannes community did not hesitate to share their impressions on social networks. Here’s a small selection of post-screening tweets.

“Length – but for how long? Every second of Martin Scorsese’s rich and epic 206-minute epic is worth it.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon: DiCaprio gives the best performance of his life in an often brilliant Scorsese epic that lacks the mythic aspect of the book but succeeds as a toxic love story.”

“Martin Scorsese may have won the rights to make 3:30 movies, but that doesn’t make him the right move for Killers of Flower Moon, a gripping true-crime story told from the killer’s point of view.

“Killers of Flower Moon deserves its run as a look at a terrible time in America’s past. The main actors all give strong performances. I wonder if Scorsese was the right person to tell this story. He stumbles into the third act and is far from perfect. Not perfect, but still solid.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon: A slow dance of power, betrayal and exploitation in a land sickened by envy and greed. Scorsese’s direction is masterful and without words: the picture-worthy shots, the pacing, the humanity, his emotional attachment to the story…extraordinary.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic crime western with some of Martin Scorsese’s darkest themes to date. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone are all phenomenal. A strong ending takes it from solid to great. A tragic reflection on greed and greed. Power.”

“It’s not just the nominations, but Oscar wins have already been secured for Lily Gladstone as Best Actress and Martin Scorsese as Best Director. It’s still early days, yes, but there’s nothing on them.

“Killers of the Flower Moon… Wow! A painful and difficult story to watch given the subject matter, but you can’t help but be amazed by such mastery of the screen. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone are absolutely amazing. Among them. Scorsese’s best.”

Killers of Flower Moon will hit theaters on October 18.
