“Vini Jr’s life is at risk,” says the creator of the project on racism in football

The attacker was the victim of racist insults last Sunday, in the Valencia-Real Madrid match

The racism case against Vinicius Junior had great repercussions around the world. In Spain, where the Brazilian was insulted, some of the press blamed the player himself for the incident. THE THING! spoke to Marcelo Carvalho, creator of the Observatory on Racial Discrimination in Football, who has repudiated the position of journalists and La Liga.

– The attitude of both La Liga and the Spanish press is deplorable. At no time did they prove to be on the side of Vini Jr, the victim. They look like the same racist fans, who blame the attacker. He suffers violence not only from the fans, but also from the entities that are supposed to protect him – Marcelo began.

On Sunday, hours after Vini Jr suffered a racial slur, President Lula officially came out and showed solidarity with the Brazilian. The politician has also called on FIFA and the Spanish federation to take action in the case. Last Monday, the Ministry of Sport also issued an official note on the matter, asking for measures from the Spanish government.

– What the Brazilian government has to do and seems to be doing is to defend Vinicius Junior. They are asking the Spanish government to do something, that Vini Jr be protected. Because as it stands today, the federation is throwing it to the lions. Vini is in Spanish territory, they (the Spanish government) have to do something. Something serious can happen to Vini Jr, and they will be responsible for it – the writer warned.

Brazilian football is no exception in cases of racism. Unfortunately, the racist insults in stadiums can still be seen here. Last Monday, the STJD sued Athletico Paranaense over a fan who imitated a monkey towards Flamengo fans in the last match between the two teams two weeks ago. For Marcelo, punishment for racism in football is still “far from ideal”. Marcelo Carvalho, creator of the project Observatory on Racial Discrimination in Football (photo: reproduction)

– Both in Spain and in Brazil, we are very far from the ideal treatment for these cases of racism. Much more can be done than we have done, both in terms of punishing clubs and individually punishing supporters who commit a racist act. The difference is that the CBF promises to do more to fight racism. La Liga, on the other hand, seems not to be – he complained.

In the first of Vini Jr’s many outbursts in recent days, the Brazilian declared that he will continue to fight against racists “even if they are distant”. The phrase was interpreted by some journalists and fans as a possible departure from Real Madrid. Marcelo Carvalho has said he would not like to see the striker leave Spain, but he stressed the importance of ensuring the player’s safety.

– At first I am against his departure from Spain, because I understand that his departure at this moment is like a victory for the racists. But we must think that so much violence that he is suffering is also a risk to his life. You can’t think that this will only be in the sports arena. There are players who already enter the field with the intention of beating Vini. It’s a security issue we need to think about. From this point of view, I cannot say if I am 100% in favor of his permanence. If I could talk to him, I would say: “Don’t leave, but if you want to leave, I’m with you”- he concluded.
