BRASÍLIA, 23 MAY – The Brazilian government has declared a state of emergency after confirming eight cases of wild birds infected with the H5N1 avian flu virus in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.
The Official Gazette of the Union published yesterday (22) the ordinance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) which establishes a state of emergency for 180 days.
“So far, there are eight confirmed cases in wild birds, seven in the state of Espírito Santo, in the municipalities of Marataízes, Cariacica, Vitória, Nova Venécia, Linhares and Itapemirim, and one in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in São João da Barra” , informed the Mapa.
To strengthen surveillance, an Emergency Operations Center (COE) will be established.
The government has also warned people not to pick up or come into contact with sick or dead birds. .
