The film ‘Always faithful’ is getting closer to surpassing ‘The mother’ (by Jennifer Lopez) in views. What is this Netflix erotic suspense thriller about? Worth seeing?
It is not uncommon for us to find ourselves among the most watched movies on Netflix that barely reach approval. Because? Sometimes because of the word-of-mouth effect, other times because they have done very well at the box office in their country of origin and they come to the platform with that marketing, or whatever. Certainly not for its cinematic quality.
It is the case of ‘Always Faithful’, the Dutch suspense thriller that has been perched at number 2 on Netflix for several days and with many, many possibilities of surpassing ‘The Mother’, the action film by Jennifer Lopez, in views. The movie has been rated 5.9 on IMDb and with 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. That is all said.
The film is directed by Andreé van Duren, a well-known Dutch filmmaker, who introduces us to ‘Always faithful’ an erotic thriller from the old school, from the 90s, with people who live a double life and who have decided to slide down the slope of immorality from infidelity to crimes. Sound juicy? Yeah, well it’s not.
‘Always faithful’ narrates lThe story of two great friends, Bodil (Bracha van Doesburg) and Isabel (Elise Schaap), who have led a double life for a long time. Bodil is married to a doctor, while Isabel is married to a novelist. From time to time they go on a cultural trip to Belgium, where Bodil has inherited a country house. The two have affairs with other men and use each other as an alibi.
But in his last escapade, something goes terribly wrong when Isabel disappears. The only trace is a large bloodbath, but she is nowhere to be found. When Isabel’s disappearance turns into a lurid murder case, Bodil faces a dilemma. If she tells the truth, the carefully constructed lies of both of them will come crashing down. and their real lives will be destroyed. Bodil can’t take any chances, so he becomes entangled in his own web of lies.
Yes, ‘Always faithful’ sounds a lot like ‘Unfaithful’, that movie you’ve seen thousands of times with Richard Gere and Diane Lane. It has all the clichés we expect: full-sex confessions, spy cameras, a cordless piano, a stun gun, a character who enjoys chopping wood with an axe, etc.
Towards the end, Bodil has to run some red herrings with serious topics like invasion of privacy, spousal abuse, mental illness and moral corruption. Some of this should be interesting to the judge, but surprisingly he doesn’t get involved in any of it.
I am naive if I think that “Always faithful” should at some point be interested in its characters and their psychology. The entire technical team has decided that following the argument is enough. Van Duren, however, makes a halfway decent attempt at creating a bit of suspense as Bodil discovers the secrets of others while trying to hide his own, but the effort is frustrating and banal as events turn into revelations and revelations into twists, each one more ridiculous than the last. In the end, it’s up to you.
