In his farewell to the São Paulo stage, Gilberto Gil excites and makes thousands of stars appear in the sky with his smile
Last Saturday night, the 18th, Gilberto Gil took the stage, with his soul smelling of talcum powder, in São Paulo, for the last time. Still on his farewell tour, King Timethe Bahian shone on a rainy night in Allianz Parque with eternal fire to drive away hell to another place.
With more than 60 years of career, Gil He continues to dance non-stop in his shows, showing that his love for the stage is like a grain. With two and a half hours of show, the artist gives everything, to everyone, going through albums like One Band One (1982), We Need to See the Moonlight (1981), Express 2222 (1972), Refazenda (1975) and much more. He moves, makes people dance, makes them smile and makes them sing, right from the beginning with “Stage” until ending with “Every Bahian girl“.
Gilberto Gil is a monolith of pure genius, which the more you look at, the more you learn to love. He always walked in faith, because he knew she wasn’t used to beech. I knew she was in the morning and in the evening, and also in the heat of summer. I knew that she was alive and well, and that she was also about to die, sad in solitude.
He also knew that the passion he poured out on the public came back multiplied — three, four, infinite times. He was not under any illusion: he understood that thought has the same fragile and divine foundation as the human being and that, in one breath, it could stop founding Greeks, Bahians and even entire universes.
At each performance on the tour, Gil welcomed a special guest. And to crown this farewell, he called none other than Roberto Carlos. THE King divided the microphones into “The Peace” and, breaking protocol, joined Gilberto Gil in a rapturous version of “Beyond the Horizon”, sending the audience into a frenzy.
This text should be about a show. But how can we write about a show when what we saw was life itself in song form? The lyrics and melodies of Gil They are the most lasting legacy he leaves us — and will continue to move, guiding steps and hearts for many generations.
Thanks, Gil. That hug.
