Director Wes Anderson presented his new feature film, Asteroid City, in competition at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday, May 23rd. With a 5-star cast, the stars thronged the red carpet for an amazing run, arguably the best of the 76th edition so far:
In attendance from left to right: Rupert Friend, Amy Mullins, Maya Hawke, Jeffrey Wright, Wes Anderson, Adrien Brody, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Damien Bonnard, Hope Davis, Bryan Cranston, Matt Dillon, Steve Carell, Fisher Stevens, Park.
The story takes place in 1955… Asteroid City, a small town in Arizona. The site is best known for its giant meteorite crater and nearby astronomical observatory. This weekend, the military and astronomers meet with five gifted children of scientific creativity to present their inventions. A few kilometers away, beyond the hills, we see atomic mushrooms caused by nuclear tests.
What did the press think of the new film from the director of The Life Aquatic and Moonrise Kingdom?
What does the French press think?
Telerama : “Wes Anderson has succeeded in creating a beautiful, charming and exciting movie family with Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks and three amazing little girls.”
Პirveli : “Cinema is more than ever immersed in an obsession that is empty and no longer produces emotion.”
the world : “Despite his rich imagination, Wes Anderson takes us into little-known territory here.”
release : “Seeing Wes Anderson’s ambitions exhausts, especially as the stories he tells are doomed to only fuel their own pettiness. It’s no longer enough to savor the perfect photogenicity of these obsessions.”
CinemaTeaser : “Beyond the colors and elegance, Wes Anderson speaks to us, speaks to us of him. Same, Wes. We don’t understand everything, but we carry on. Cinema is better than life, which helps life.”
What does the international press think…
Deadline : “It’s an original, fresh and disarming creation like you’ve never seen anywhere else, with a remarkable and often thrilling quality of stylized storytelling.”
Empire : “It’s a little confusing at times, and it’s always a little hard to listen to. If you don’t like Wes Anderson’s style, you won’t. But those of us who do, hope he keeps on ‘doing it.’
guard : “As always, there is no emotional content, although the theme of condolence is the main focus. The film develops skillfully and excitingly, skillfully absorbing the consequences of pathos and loneliness without letting it slow down. (…) and this is an expression of style and what It’s style!”
THR : “The point is, there’s just not enough here to really engage the audience beyond the usual aesthetics — there’s no lasting emotional connection or feeling, and very few genuine laughs.”
variety : “Asteroid City looks amazing, but as a movie it’s only for Wes Anderson and maybe not for all of them.”
Asteroid City, in theaters June 21.
