Tina Turner in Spielberg? The Queen of Rock refused this lead role

Tina Turner’s contribution to cinema was rare but significant. As well as the GoldenEye title track, which accompanied Pierce Brosnan’s first mission as 007 in 1995, and which is one of the most popular songs in the James Bond saga.

On screen, Tina Turner camped out as the Entity, Bartertown’s unforgiving leader, opposite Mel Gibson in Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome (1985), with a final cameo as the heroine Mary Nice alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger/Jack Slater or the Acid Queen. Ken Russell’s volume in 1975.

But the Queen of Rock’n’Roll could make an additional contribution to cinema, not just one: the title role in Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, adapted from Alice Walker’s work, The Color Purple, played by Whoopi Goldberg.
