Neither The Nutty Professor nor A Hardcore Cop: many forget Eddie Murphy’s participation in the highest grossing of his career

Eddie Murphy is one of the top names in comedy in Hollywood.

Eddie Murphy is one of Hollywood’s most popular comedy stars, best known for his iconic roles in Cop (1984), A Prince in New York (1988) and The Nutty Professor (1996). Interestingly, the biggest box office of his career is none of these, but a holding that many forget.

The highest grosser of Eddie Murphy’s career is Shrek 2 (2004), which grossed over $928 million. The actor voices Donkey in the franchise, voicing the character in Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010). Shrek 5 was recently announced with the original cast and a Donkey spin-off could also take place, given that Eddie Murphy himself was in favor of this derivative.

What’s more interesting is that, of the five highest-grossing films of Eddie Murphy’s career, four are from the Shrek franchise. After the second film in the lead are Shrek the Third (over $807 million), Shrek Forever After (over $756 million), Shrek the First (over $491 million) and Cop (over $491 million).

In Shrek 2, after marrying Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), Shrek (Mike Myers) lives happily in his swamp. Upon returning from their honeymoon, Fiona receives a letter from her parents, who do not know that she is now an ogre, who invite her to dinner with her great love, with the intention of meeting him. At great cost Fiona manages to persuade Shrek to visit them, still having the company of Donkey (Murphy). Trouble begins when her parents find out she hasn’t married the prince (Rupert Everett), to whom she was betrothed, and they send Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to separate them.

In a campaign for a Donkey spin-off, Eddie Murphy even joked that his character would be funnier than Puss in Boots, which has already received two films of its own. “I’d be absolutely open to them coming up with another one [filme de] Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,” the comedian told ETalk in a recent interview. “You know, they did the Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have made a movie about Donkey.’ Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he’s not as funny as Donkey.”
