The only true 24-hour gap, Anhangabaú had a dawn stampede. Other stages closed at the end of the night and only returned in the morning. Does a Cultural Breakthrough that goes home to sleep and comes back make sense? see summary
São Paulo had, in 2023, a Virada Cultural that has not turned around. The only space that really worked 24 hours, in Anhangabaú, was almost empty during the night. The other stages, according to the programme, closed at the end of the evening of Saturday 27 and returned only on the morning of Sunday 28.
Not that there was no shortage of good evening and morning shows. The catharsis of BaianaSystem, the class of Alceu Valença and a full tribute to Rita Lee were among the highlights. Gloria Groove and Anavitória faced and overcame obstacles (sound problems in Anhangabaú and rain in Butantã, respectively).
It’s not an artistic question. It’s not even a problem that arose in 2023, it’s good to be clear. This year’s edition tried to solve the huge difficulty of insecurity in the Center, see the scenes of the apocalypse in 2022. The idea of reoccupying and giving a new meaning to the historical center based on cultural performances had to be adapted.
The Chá viaduct, Praça Ramos de Azevedo and the stairs of Líbero Badaró were enclosed, isolating Anhangabaú from its surroundings, as if it were a separate slice of the city. To avoid the fishing boats, the party took place in an enclosure, summed up one fan.
The unprecedented security scheme was a “catchup” in the Center. In the last show, on Sunday night, Iza stopped singing for three minutes due to a fight in the audience. One person was removed and the show continued, without erasing the impression of a much quieter weekend than in years past.
The public entered on Saturday through the bars and the magazine and happily attended two great shows by Gloria Groove and BaianaSystem. The audience was full, but not overcrowded. As soon as the Bahian group stopped playing, the mass withdrawal came. Anhangabaú emptied and only started filling up during the Rita Lee tribute at 11:30 on Sunday.
Stampede is understandable given people’s fear of experiencing another year of apocalypse – which didn’t happen in 2023. But the impression is that programming itself has sought out this movement, see the popularity gap between the first two attractions and the following, much less popular, Josyara and Dread Mar-I.
4 – The stampede and the dawn
The mass withdrawal started immediately after the BaianaSystem fair. There were still other shows in the main space and other smaller stages in Anhangabaú. Argentine singer Dread Mar-I and Brazilian Luedji Luna, later attractions, sang for a small audience in the vicinity of the stage. Further afield, around 2.30am, the police could be seen talking – they were tense and frowning at the start of the event.
Even the magazine at the entrance became more compliant with the decline in audience and left aside the metal detector. The number of vehicles has also decreased by half. To approach the stage of the Dread Mar-I concert, no one had to be pushed. It was possible to arrive without pressure and with peace of mind.
5 – The return with a tribute to Rita
The show united the three faces of the singer. Rita dos Mutantes, Tutti Frutti and Roberto de Carvalho were present at the show created by their son Beto Lee late Sunday morning in Anhangabaú. The singers Manu Gavassi, Débora Reis and Paula Lima have been invited. I’m a little out opened the Mutantes stage, which Beto called a “power trio”.
Beto talked about Tutti Frutti, the band Rita was in in the 70s. He recalled that bassist Lee Marcucci, a former member of the group, was the father of many bass players in the country, and started Gardens of Babylon. Black sheep it made people raise their hand and get excited. The last song showed Rita’s pop strength: Perfume launcher.
6 – Rain all over the city
On Sunday’s gray afternoon with light rain, the Butantã stage was quiet to receive the Anavitória duo. People were concentrated further along the track, with lots of empty spaces in the background. The magazine was done hastily, with a certain carelessness. But there were a lot of police around.
Arena Butantã operated with two alternating stages, set up facing each other. They were much smaller spaces than the Anhangabaú valley. Anavitória makes riot-proof music. They sing cute, make sweet songs and envelop their audience in a loving mood. when they sang there love the rain started, but it didn’t cool the show.
7 – The finale with Alceu and Iza
In the penultimate show in Anhangabaú, Alceu Valença won the challenge of singing in the freezing rain on Sunday afternoon and put on a beautiful show. In front of a raincoat-clad audience, the man from Pernambuco showed the difference a skilled musician makes. Even in adverse conditions, with few people crammed onto the track, he managed to bring the enthusiasts closer together and make many of them forget the cold produced by soaked clothes.
Alceu has in its favor a collection of songs that act on their own. Lunar Taxi, La Belle De Jour, like two animals. In the end, he has used an asset that always works in his shows of him. He said he wouldn’t be a hypocrite, that it had already been agreed that he would leave the stage and return for an encore as soon as he heard the audience clamoring for his name. And so it was. Upon returning to an ovation, he sang Bruna Tropicana and left the stage.
Then came the last star of the main stage. Iza put on a vibrant show with her main hits and this lifted the audience despite the sound failures that were repeated again this Sunday and the rain that scared part of the audience.
The singer asked the audience for help singing due to the flu. “Think of a person with the flu, but with a fire in their ass to sing for you. Canceling was not an option. St. Paul, I’m here for you. If it weren’t for this love, I wouldn’t make it.” The audience was larger, with groups near the stage. Even so, it was possible to perceive empty spaces in the audience. The show was far from full on the main stage.
