The success of the series is such that HBO naturally ordered a second season, which will adapt part of the second video game The Last of Us: Part II.
The Last of Us Season 2 won’t be released until 2025
If fans already knew they’d have to wait a while to discover these new episodes, they’ll have to be patient with the latest event rocking Hollywood: the month-long writers’ strike. Guild of America after a failed new deal with AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers).
The union is fighting for a reevaluation of rights and working conditions, as well as a wage increase for screenwriters. This strike has stopped many plays, films and series, and this also applies to the works of HBO.
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s executive vice president responsible for developing and overseeing original drama series, told Deadline that an American cable channel had to adapt its broadcast to accommodate the strike, causing delays:
“Although the writers are on hold at the moment, I hope we can reach an agreement as soon as possible, otherwise we will have to evaluate which shows will air in late 2024 and which series will be in 2025.”
At this point, the series I’m about to air won’t necessarily be ready if this strike lasts six to nine months. So yeah, it’s a big question for us, but I think we’ll definitely look at it once we get to that point.”
He is “Too early to tell” How the programming plans will turn out, but the strike will significantly disrupt them. Francesca Orsi explained that HBO is targeting a 2025 broadcast date for The Last of Us Season 2, so fans won’t know until then. If the strike continues and no agreement is reached, new episodes may even air later.
Other HBO series are affected by the writers’ strike, such as Euphoria Season 3, which won’t air until 2025, or White Lotus Season 3, which isn’t expected to be available until 2024.
