Have you ever wondered what Robert Downey Jr. did in a villainous role? According to Jon Favreau, director of the Iron Man franchise, Marvel already has. The director revealed in an interview with the studio’s YouTube channel that the first role the actor was considered for was not that of a hero, but that of a villain: he was supposed to be Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four (2005), finished lived by Julian McMahon.
I remember you guys had already talked to him about something like Doctor Doom. He went through Marvel during the Fantastic Four trial, so everyone knew who he was.

However, it was the Iron Man character who married Downey perfectly. Also, as he was already known, he was attracting the attention of other artists, not only establishing the film as the beginning of the Marvel Universe, but also serving as an impetus for cast building.
“Once I decided it was going to be him, everything got easier. You understood the character’s voice. After him, people approached the project one by one, because it made it look interesting.”
It’s worth mentioning that Iron Man (2008) kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – this is where Nick Fury’s character seems to start rallying the Avengers. The feature film, which grossed $585 million at the worldwide box office, earned two direct sequels (2010 and 2013), and the actor reprized the role in several more studio films, including guest appearances.
It’s also important to note that Doctor Doom also wears iron armor, i.e., one way or another Downey would be covered in sturdy steel which grants him super strength, including the ability to fly.
