Nicolas Cage will finally live Superman. After a movie that didn’t work in the 90s, the actor will make a special appearance as the hero in ‘The Flash’. The information was confirmed by the director of the feature film, Andy Muschietti, in an interview with Squire.
Nicolas Cage as Superman
Nicolas Cage would bring Superman to life in 1998, in the movie ‘Superman Lives’. The feature film would be directed by Tim Burton, who was in a great period at the time: he had directed “Batman” (1989) and “Batman Returns” (1992). The films have grossed over half a billion dollars.
Also, he had won an Oscar for ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ (1995), but none of that was enough to get the movie off the ground.
“Superman Lives”
Development
Already in the development of the project, Kevin Smith was inspired by the “Death of Superman” comics to write the screenplay. However, Tim Burton wanted something innovative, not just an adaptation.
Among Burton’s wishes was a total overhaul of Superman’s costume, abandoning the red and blue and recording in London, away from Superman’s home. Jon Peters already wanted a villain that looked like a giant spider and Clark Kent doing kung-fu on the scene.
As screenwriter Wesley Strick, who previously worked with the director on “Batman Returns,” revealed in the documentary “The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened?”, Burton and Peters have always had creative disagreements. According to him, the producer had ideas that the director didn’t agree with and vice versa.

Cancellation

Can the movie still happen?
Tim Burton, however, hasn’t given up on the chance. It is impossible to know how the film would have turned out at the time, but, in the documentary, the director does not deny his desire to produce ‘Superman Lives’ again.
Come see me when I’m 90 and I’m here to say, “I’ll do it again, I’ll do it.”.’
