After beating Fluminense and breathing a sigh of relief in the Brasileirão, Corinthians are turning their full attention to the Copa do Brasil. The team will have the difficult task of overcoming a two-goal deficit against Atlético-MG to qualify for the next stage of the competition.
If the feat is confirmed, it would not be the first time that Timão has managed to advance after leaving the confrontation behind. Under the Gazzetta dello Sport listed some of the club’s major upsets in the history of the competition.
Corinthians vs Cyanorte in 2005
In 2005, Corinthians faced the modest Cianorte and ended up losing the first leg, in Paraná, 3-0, with the right to a bicycle kick goal scored by striker Valdiram. In the second leg, therefore, the Parque São Jorge team would be forced to win by four goals.
At the time, the team was led by Argentinean Daniel Passarella and had names like Carlos Alberto, Roger Flores and Carlitos Tévez. In Pacaembu, Timão handled the unexpected and beat his opponent 5-1.

Cianorte also drew the duel, as the Copa do Brasil still has the qualifying goal rule, but Gustavo Nery scored the decisive goal in the last leg of the match, placing the club in the round of 16 of the tournament.
Corinthians’ campaign that year, however, would not last long. The team was eliminated in the next stage, by Figueirense, on penalties.
Corinthians x Goiás: the story of the grape
In 2008, Timão took Goiás to the round of 16 in a clash that caused much talk. Even before the ball rolled, the emerald club’s manager, Haile Pinheiro, teased the purple shirt Corinthians launched that year, saying he’d suck the grape once his side managed to qualify, alluding to the color of the uniform.
In the first meeting, the Goiás team opened 3-1 in Serra Dourada and set foot in the next stage. The leader then completed by stating that the grapes had turned into wine and the bill had already been paid.
In the return, at Morumbi, Corinthian scored 4-0, with great performances from Herrera, André Santos and Rincón, winning the comeback. At the end of the match, the goalkeeper Felipe, from Corinthians, retorted to Hailé and sucked a bunch of green grapes, the color of Goiás’ shirt.

Goalkeeper Felipe teases Goiás, who is holding a bunch of grapes after the Corinthians table.
“They beat us 3-1, they danced creu, they talked about purple grapes, but now it’s our party and I ate green grapes. Football is two games, they talked too much. Corinthians fans like grapes green,” the archer said at the time.
That season, Timão would still overtake São Caetano and Botafogo before reaching the final of the Copa do Brasil. The team ended up losing the decision to Sport.
Corinthians vs Atlético-GO last year
To seek their place in the next stage, the Corinthians need not go back many years. The team can draw inspiration from the feat of 2022, when they overturned the match before Atlético-GO, in the quarter-finals.
The team lost 2-0 in Goiás, but managed to overturn the deficit at the Neo Química Arena, winning 4-1. That game saw a hat-trick from striker Yuri Alberto, who scored his first goals there in a shirt . club.
Timão also reached the final last season but were once again defeated in the decider, this time by Flamengo, on penalties.
Led by Vanderlei Luxemburgo, Corinthians are looking for their fourth Copa do Brasil title – they were champions in 1995, 2002 and 2009. The match against Atlético-MG is scheduled for this Wednesday, at 21:30 (Sunday Brasilia), at the Arena Neo Quimica.
