The crisis in Vasco increases the pressure on Barbieri and Mr. Balances in office

The assessment is that the coach’s work could be better, especially for the team’s preparation time

Vasco is experiencing its first major crisis since becoming SAF. In the relegation zone occupying 18th position, the team has not won in seven games and lost their last three, mounting pressure within the football department, especially on coach Maurício Barbieri, who swings in charge.

Despite the shortcomings, the agreement is that the team is able to make more, especially for the time they have available between one round and another. The exception was the match against Coritiba, the only one played in the middle of the week. Furthermore, no opponent faced Vasco with a full week of training and even so Cruz-Maltino was unable to take advantage of the situation.

The lack of a game standard is also annoying and the feeling is that things are not going to get better. This is why the climate at CT Moacyr Barbosa is one of desolation and mistrust, despite Abel Braga’s efforts to ease the pressure. The technical director was instrumental in passing the security and filtering requests to the cast and the technical committee, but the task was onerous, even more so by providing support practically alone.

Sporting director Paulo Bracks has a colder relationship with the technical commission and the team, and this distance indicates to many that the job is not well valued by the coach. It is worth noting that Bracks and Barbieri worked together at América-MG, but the partnership was short-lived, just two months. The manager was fired after winning just one match in seven rounds in the 2019 Série B.

– I didn’t participate in the signing of Barbieri, but he is a young and modern coach who has had good experiences at Flamengo and Goiás. Thus, it was justified to hire him for América. But he didn’t work on the field. I believe that when there is no total harmony between commission and cast, the result is not what was expected. It wasn’t for lack of work or dedication, but, as they say in football jargon, it didn’t work out – explained Bracks, in an interview with Superesportes, in October 2019.

It is worth noting that Maurício Barbieri was not Vasco’s first choice. After gaining access to Série B, Jorginho did not renew his contract and Cruz-Maltino focused on hiring foreign coaches. Argentine Juan Pablo Vojvoda was the favourite, Portuguese António Oliveira was thought of as a plan B, but the Brazilian ended up being signed due to his experience at Red Bull Bragantino, which is also a company club.

The internal assessment is that Maurício Barbieri feels the weight of the pressure for results. The feeling is that the coach could be fired in the event of a defeat against Flamengo, given that the climate will become even more unsustainable. The classic of the millions will be played next Monday at the Maracanã.

777 Partners shares the opinion that Barbieri’s work could be better and has already shown that it does not mind changing technicians if necessary. Genoa, for example, has belonged to the North American group since September 2021 and has changed the technical command three times. On Tuesday afternoon, the director of football, Paulo Bracks, will hold a press conference at coach Moacyr Barbosa, in an attempt to explain Vasco’s troubled moment.
