The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on Wednesday it had lodged a complaint with FIFA after defender Robert Renan was racially abused after an U-20 World Cup match.
The insults were directed at Renan as he left the pitch at Argentina’s Ciudad de la Plata stadium, where Brazil beat Tunisia 4-1 in the round of 16 of the tournament, the CBF reported.
The player, sent off in the 45th minute of the second half, was subjected to racism on social media. After the match, Renan shared screenshots of racist messages he received on Instagram.
“The profiles (of the perpetrators of the racist attacks) are already archived by the CBF and will be sent to the local justice and FIFA with the request for punishment,” the CBF said.
“The CBF vehemently condemns any kind of discriminatory action in football and will no longer tolerate such cases in sport.”
The confederation said it was the first football entity to adopt the possibility of punishing a club for racism in its regulations.
On Friday, the CBF announced that Brazil will play friendlies against Guinea and Senegal as part of a campaign in support of striker Vinicius Jr., who was the victim of racial abuse while playing for Real Madrid in La Liga this season.
