On TV this evening: Jacques Dutron’s best role in a movie

Every day AlloCiné recommends watching a movie on TV (again). This evening: Jacques Dutron slides in the skin of artist Van Gogh in front of the lens of Maurice Pilates.

After meeting an unexpected notoriety for his success with the title “Et moi, et moi, et moi”, Jacques Dutron, in collaboration with lyricist Jacques Lantzman, became one of the most prominent figures of the yéyé era. In 1973, Jean-Marie Perrier convinced the singer, who was then taking hits, to be the protagonist of his first feature film, Antoine et Sébastien. Since then, Jacques Dutron has alternated between recording and filming albums, going beyond the camera of Claude Lellouche, Andrzej Zhoulavsky, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Mock or even Claude Chabrol.

But it was Maurice Pilates who offered him his most distinctive role: the role of Van Gogh in a film of the same name dedicated to the last days of the artist’s life. The film scored very well at the box office as it garnered less than 1.3 million viewers in cinemas. The performance of Jacques Dutron, in the skin of this incomprehensible genius throughout his life, is astonishing in its truth and humanity. He received César in 1992 for Best Actor.
