Franck Gastambide has approached Prime Video to stream his fourth feature film as a director. After setting up the camera in Pattaya, then Marseille, the Frenchman takes us this time to Colombia. Heading to Barrio Escobar in Medellin, a city known for hosting notorious drug lords. A unique cinema location, as he told us:
“The theme of the movie was a bit about Pablo Escobar, I wondered about the most “Escobarian” places in this incredible city and was taken to this neighborhood called Barrio Pablo Escobar because it was built. It is an old landfill.
To our surprise, no one was filmed there. Definitely not for security stories. But because this area has left a bad memory in the city. The vast majority of this country hates Escobar, and rightly so.
But residents in this area continue to have a somewhat ambiguous relationship with him. But there was no talk of making a movie about Escobar’s fame“.
With Medellin, Gastambid remains true to his style and offers the platform’s subscribers a comedy that is a little schoolboy, but offers its share. Whether behind the wheel of a sports car or running on the roofs of houses, he and his cast give us two hours of amazing performance.
“We added a lot of complexity. That’s what makes this movie so special. We couldn’t have shot a scene there if we didn’t have a scene where we go down those mythical tin roofs. I had to ride a motorcycle down those endless stairs..”
For this new project, the director is surrounded by lifelong friends – from Ramsay Bedi to Anuar Tubal via Brahim Buhlel. And new actors, including Raymond Cruise (Breaking Bad), who plays the big bad guys, and Mike Tyson, who offers himself a very small role, but who will reveal the filming. “She asked who she was going to star with and the imdbs of all the actors!”Gastambid also revealed to us.
If you enjoyed the actor-director’s previous films, then you will definitely appreciate Medellin’s style. Watch it today on Prime Video.
