UEFA condemns the harassment of the referee in the Europa League final, accuses Mourinho of abusive language

UEFA on Friday condemned the harassment of Europa League final referee Anthony Taylor and his family by Roma fans, while Roma coach Jose Mourinho was accused of using abusive language towards the ‘referee.

Taylor came under fire following Roma’s defeat by Sevilla on Wednesday in the decider second match of the UEFA tournament.

The game was tense, with Taylor handing out 14 yellow cards, the most ever in a Europa League match, and applying nearly 30 minutes of added time.

The day after the match, videos circulated on social media showing the English referee and his family being harassed by Roma fans at Budapest airport.

Roma fans can be seen in the video harassing Taylor, 44, and his family, who asked for protection from airport security as they sought refuge in a safe area.

“UEFA strongly condemns the abusive behavior towards its referee Anthony Taylor and his family. Such actions are unacceptable and undermine the good sportsmanship and respect that UEFA represents,” the football governing body said in a statement. .

“We are constantly striving to improve safety measures for referees in coordination with local authorities. We will carefully evaluate incidents and incorporate valuable information into our future event planning processes.”

As part of the disciplinary process following the final, the governing body charged Mourinho on Friday, who was filmed yelling profanities at referees outside the Puskás Arena.

The Portuguese coach criticized the refereeing in his statements after the match, saying: “it was an intense, masculine, vibrant match with a referee who looked Spanish. He was yellow, yellow, yellow all the time.”
