Leclerc cited car problems and will start 19th
Two-time Red Bull champion Max Verstappen had no problem securing pole position at the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix in Catalonia.
The championship leader set a time of 1m12s272s and was nearly five-tenths ahead of the Ferrari of host Carlos Sainz. “I love coming to Barcelona, I love the track, I have many good memories here and I hope to add more tomorrow,” said Verstappen, whose first F1 win was at the Catalan track.
The second row has a surprising Lando Norris (McLaren) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine), who can still lose grid positions for disturbing their rivals in training. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Nico Hulkenberg (Haas), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Oscar Piastri (McLaren) complete the top 10.
The formation was also marked by the frustrating performances of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), who did not even pass Q1 and will start from 19th, Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) and George Russell (Mercedes), cut in Q2 and will start respectively in 11th and 12th.
“I have no answers at the moment but we will check the car well and I would be very surprised if everything goes well,” Leclerc said, citing “very strange” behavior from the back of his Ferrari. The Spanish GP starts at 10 this Sunday (4).
