Rede Globo has censored yet another same-sex kiss. After avoiding kisses from Clara (Regiane Alves) and Helena (Priscila Sztejnman) three times in “Vai na Fé”, another LGBTQIAPN+ couple had their love scenes cut out in this Saturday’s episode (3/ 6) of the seven o’clock soap opera. The decision was criticized by the public on social media. “Cut it again?” asked one netizen.
In the scripts given to the actors there was an explicit indication of a kiss between Vini (Guthierry Sotero) and Yuri (Jean Paulo Campos): “With relief, the two face each other. in Vini”.
However, Globo chose to leave the kiss implied. Even without showing the kiss, the exchange of affection was recorded by a speech from Guthierry Sotero’s character. “Why are you ashamed to kiss a boy?” asked the boy.
In addition to the four kisses in “Vai na Fé”, two love sequences between the characters of Camila Pitanga (“Velho Chico”) and Elisa Volpatto (“Bom Dia, Verônica”) in “Aruanas” were also censored by the broadcaster . While the cult telenovela has an evangelical and more conservative audience, “Aruanas” is a more progressive production and is broadcast after 10pm, presumably for adults.
The decision to cut an LGBTQIAPN+ expression of affection for the sixth time solidified the stigma of regression in Globo.
The cuts, which seek to make LGBTQIAPN+ affection invisible, were accompanied by the decision to hide the special “Falas de Pride” in the night grid.
Earlier this year, Globo reported that the special would be shown after the nine o’clock soap opera, just as happened two years ago, when the project received numerous accolades and scored 16.9 rating points in the Great St. Paul. In recent weeks, however, the broadcaster reported that it had changed its schedule, choosing to air the documentary dedicated to LGBTQIAPN+ pride a month after “Tela Quente”, around midnight.
The change of schedule reveals the new and surprising attitude of the broadcaster which, after siding in favor of minorities during the ultra-conservative government of Jair Bolonaro, spontaneously closes its doors in the midst of cultural openness during the Lula government.
A behind-the-scenes detail could explain the twist. The rebirth coincides with the departure of Ricardo Waddington and the appointment of Amauri Soares as head of Globo Studios.
