Against Varillas, the first Peruvian player to reach the round of 16 of a Grand Slam since Jaime Yzaga at the 1994 US Open, Djokovic made clear his superiority, with solid tennis and virtually no mistakes.
“It’s the first time we’ve played, I know he’s a specialist on clay, he has a very constant game. I’m happy because this week I definitely showed the highest level”, commented the Serbian after the match.
Djokovic’s next opponent will be Russian Karen Khachanov, who previously knocked out Italian Lorenzo Sonego 3 sets to 1.
