What would the Avengers look like if one of their most iconic leaders and superheroes was someone else? It almost happened. At the time of Iron Man’s casting, former Marvel Studios head David Maisel wanted Robert Downey Jr., but he received criticism and was even called insane by the studio. Luckily, the executive reacted and landed the actor for the role.

Even so, David Maisel fought for the actor in the role and succeeded, making him one of the first Marvel superheroes in theaters (after only the Hulk).
The company board thought I was crazy to put the company’s future in the hands of an addict. I helped them understand how good he was for the role. We all had faith that he was sober and would stay so.

In the end, Robert Downey Jr. auditioned for Iron Man and the final decision was between him and Timothy Olyphant (from Panic AND The Mandalorian). And we already know what happened next.
