Unedited, in fact, it was performed by Gilda Sportiello
An MP from the populist Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) party became the first woman to breastfeed her newborn in Italy’s Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday.
Gilda Sportiello, 36, sat with her son in the highest pews during the vote on a decree on public administration and began to breastfeed the baby, receiving unanimous applause from her colleagues.
The boy wore a hat to protect his head from the powerful air conditioning in the House plenary and remained calm while nursing. Then, other parliamentarians went to Sportiello and congratulated her on the unprecedented gesture.
“Today is a historic day”, celebrated the deputy Valentina D’Orso, also from the M5S. “Finally, a regulatory change has been implemented that allows minors to enter the plenary”, reiterated Francesco Silvestri, party group leader in the Chamber. “It’s an example for many public and private employers,” he added.
Italy is governed for the first time in its history by a woman, Giorgia Meloni, of the right, but female participation in politics is still low, occupying only a third of the seats in Parliament. .
