Bia Haddad reached a new milestone in her career this Wednesday as she advanced to the semifinals of Roland Garros. The Brazilian, who had never passed the second round in a Grand Slam, won Ons Jabour, 2 sets to 1, in Paris.
Bia celebrated the progress and explained, mainly, her “discipline” to get where she is. According to the tennis player, her trajectory is marked by patience, calm and taking advantage step by step to grow.
“I think I’ll never get past the second round, it’s like I said, from the beginning of my career I’ve crossed many barriers, going to the top 100, then the top 50, then the top 20, winning the Master 1000. All this in my career it happened slowly, I had to consolidate myself, I’ve never been a disruptive person and phenomenon, I’ve always had to work hard to trust myself, I’m very happy, I believe even more because Ons was a player I respected ”he said in an interview with ESPN.
“When you enter a field like this for the first time to play, it’s a big field, the wind changes. I was having a lot of chances, it was 4-1 for her and there were two games I could have won. I kept saying: ‘friend, don’t accept it, don’t settle.” I agreed with Rafa that I would come in to win a set, if we go to the third I believe in it a lot. I’ve been very disciplined about following my game and staying put even though I keep taking drop-shots. I am very happy, I am really living a dream. I worked really hard to be here,” he added.
Despite the disadvantage in the first set, Bia put in a gala performance to overturn the match and consecrate her ranking. The Brazilian was the protagonist on the pitch with top-level serves and good reading of the game to close with partials of 3/6, 7/6 (5) and 6/1.
“It was very important for me to have the courage to change direction, to move forward. A player who likes to drop doesn’t like the high ball and likes to have space, so I had to change height or come in. It’s mine before I played i quarters so there were ghosts, but anyhow, I’m happy that today I was able to serve better, yesterday I was very disciplined to improve, I was able to do some good parallel bars and change direction. he went through all the experiences, the match that I played well, that I didn’t play so well, that I fought. Let’s continue and see how far it goes,” he concluded.
Bia, by the way, is now the first Brazilian tennis player in the semifinal of Roland Garros in the Open Era, the first to beat a world number 1 and the first to reach the WTA 1000 final.
The tennis player awaits the winner of the match between Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, who will face each other this Wednesday, to define her opponent in the semifinals.
