Disney plans to release 50 films over the next few years, including live-action remakes

Disney has been investing in turning its animations into feature films since 2010. With the success of live-action productions, the studio plans to release more than 50 feature films over the next few years, according to Walt Disney Pictures chairman Sean Bailey in a newspaper interview The New York Times.

Among the expected releases are the live-action versions of ‘Moana’, ‘Hercules’ and ‘Lilo and Stitch’ and the sequel ‘Abracadabra 3’. Already the prequel “Mufasa: The Lion King”, with a release date in 2024, can expand into “a great and epic saga”, like the “Star Wars” franchise.

Another idea from Bailey is to reboot the five-film ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise, though nothing official has been announced. “We think we have a really beautiful and emotional story that honors the films that came before it, but also has something new to say,” Bailey said.

Bailey served as president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production for 13 years — an eternity in Hollywood, where movie bosses often get dumped every few years. This division makes two or three big-budget films a year for theatrical release and three low-budget films for Disney+.

Over the years, the executive has collected some defeats – such as “Mulan” and “The Lone Ranger”, but also many successes. His live-action ‘Aladdin’ grossed $1.1 billion at the box office, while ‘The Lion King’ grossed $1.7 billion and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ grossed $1.3 billion.

These numbers reflect Bailey’s successful effort to transform older Disney stories, including empowered heroines and a cast that emphasizes diversity.

In this sense, the actress Halle Bailey brought the mermaid Ariel to life. Latin actress Rachel Zegler will star in the live-action “Branca de Neve”, to be released in 2024. Yara Shahidi played Tinker Bell (Tinker Bell) in the recent “Peter Pan and Wendy”, making her the first black woman to play the character on the screen.
