Sampaoli praises Soteldo, but denies having asked Flamengo for a Santos

The partnership between Jorge Sampaoli, current Flamengo manager, and Yferson Soteldo, Santos number 10 shirt, was very successful in 2019, when both defended Alvinegro from Vila Belmiro. In recent days there would have been an alleged interest on the part of the coach in having the Venezuelan back in the squad. However, traces of the Argentine commander were lost during the press conference after Flamengo’s victory over Racing in the Libertadores.

“He’s a player I worked with at Santos. But it’s not true that I asked him here. Now we are in a phase of improving our squad. New players will definitely appear in this window, but I don’t know how to name respect and admire a lot and that he had a great season with me at Santos” Sampaoli said.

Soteldo arrived at Santos in 2019 on the advice of Jorge Sampaoli. With a lot of mistrust at the beginning, the Venezuelan conquered his space and conquered the fans, later becoming one of the protagonists of that team, which finished second in Brazil, second only to Flamengo in the standings.

Under the guidance of Sampaoli, in 2019, Soteldo played 51 games and scored 12 goals. The manager left Baixada Santista at the end of that season, but Soteldo continued to be successful in 2020, actively participating in Santos winning the Libertadores vice-scudetto.

In 2021 Soteldo moved to Canadian football and, in mid-2022, he returned to Santos on loan from Tigres, who hold the economic rights. In the current season, Soteldo has suffered from injuries and, moreover, his football does not even closely resemble the one he presented in his two seasons at Vila Belmiro.
