Todd Phillips’ Joker was released on Wednesday, June 7th in our darkrooms in celebration of Warner Bros. 100 years. Released in October 2019, the feature film was an international triumph, grossing $1.07 billion at the global box office and winning two Oscars (Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Original Score for Hildur Guðinadottir).
In the face of this success, a sequel is announced. In June 2022, Todd Phillips will announce the title and release date of this second opus. Joker: Folie à deux will hit theaters in October 2024. Shortly after, the filmmaker announced that Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix in this movie musical.
If the first opus cost “only” 55 million dollars, its budget has tripled in the sequel. according to variety, the production cost of Joker 2 reaches 150 million dollars. A spectacular increase due to inflation, health measures related to covid, the difficulty of certain scenes, but also the increase in wages.
Director, co-author and producer Todd Phillips will receive $20 million, as well Joaquin Phoenix, who earned just $4.5 million for his role as Arthur Flack, which won him an Oscar for Best Actor. Lady Gaga, new to the world, will receive 10 million dollars. Among them, respectively, they represent a third of the budget. The two stars will be accompanied by Zazie Beatz, Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener.
Joker: Madness for two Drops us into the corridors of Arkham Asylum to tell you about meeting Harley Quinn and her beloved clown. The two heroes must then meet in the Bronx to dance on the steps already seen in the first film. At least, that’s what the video captured by the paparazzi during the filming of the feature film suggests.
