The film that scarred an entire generation and paved the way for exorcism films can be rediscovered in theaters starting June 7, Warner Bros.’ 100th anniversary.
Released in theaters in September 1974, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist is number 7 on the top 10 highest-grossing horror films, grossing $441 million worldwide (the latter was topped by Andres Muschietti’s recent remake).
This masterpiece of horror cinema is adapted from William Peter Blatt’s book, which was inspired by a true story: a case of possession that befell a young thirteen-year-old boy living in Cottage City, Maryland, in 1949. Friedkin’s film. It was nominated in 10 Oscar categories and won the statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay.

William Friedkin will not be involved in the project. When the trilogy was announced, the director, quite vocal on social media, said: “There’s a rumor on IMDB that I’m involved in a remake of The Exorcist. That’s not a rumor, that’s a flat-out lie. There’s not enough money or motivation in the world for me to do that..”
Exorcist: Believer It will be released in theaters on October 11, 2024.
