Fabrizio Gallas: ‘Did Djokovic close the GOAT debate?’

The Serbian jumps ahead for number of Grand Slams and many other records

Can this Sunday’s victory at Roland Garros and the new record set by Novak Djokovic with his 23rd Grand Slam title put an end to the debate on GOAT, the greatest of all time?

For many the feeling for Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be there, especially the way they raised their mug or the way they played/played, but looking at the numbers, the Serbian tested himself close up of the debate.

Now that will be 388 weeks at the top of the leaderboard, plus Masters 1000 titles, best record against two biggest rivals, plus ATP World Finals titles (equal to Federer). Some records he won’t break. Most consecutive weeks at the top, 227 for Roger Federer, Roland Garros titles for Nadal. There is still time for more, such as eight Wimbledon victories (it could equal this year) and the all-time record of 24 Grand Slams held by Australian Margaret Court.

While we are seeing the new generation take over tennis, the mental and physical strength of the Serbian prevails in the Grand Slams and as long as he is hungry and with a minimum of health – albeit with a pain here and another there – will be the favorite and have a good chance of winning.

Casper Ruud, brave, courageous, loses his third Grand Slam final. I had a big break in that first set. A silly point or two like a smash ended up making all the difference. He played a lot and still lost the partial. His turn may still come to pinch at least one of these cups.
