Lira says Lula’s government must ‘prepare to live with those who think differently’

The Speaker of the Chamber also claims that his ‘personal fuel is running out’ in the face of a Planalto base ‘that doesn’t feel low’

The mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), said this on Monday 12 that his “personal fuel is running out with a base that doesn’t feel like a base”. Lira, however, said that he will not take any type of vote that could disturb the country, but he has sent a message to Planalto. “The government must prepare to coexist with those who think differently and dialogue with those who think differently,” he said.

In an interview with Jornal das Dez, from GlobeNews, said that the Esplanada dos Ministérios project, built during the transition period, did not perform as expected by the government. “In the current government, President Lula has opted for a project of his esplanade of ministries during the transition,” he said.

Faced with the failures in the political articulation, the Lula government had many difficulties in the negotiations for the approval of the interim measure to renovate the Esplanada in the Chamber.

“There is not a line, a hitch, that the Chamber has imposed on the government in matters essential to the state,” he said. Lira underlined that the Chamber is not an obstacle to any vote by the Executive and provided examples of approvals of the fiscal framework and of the Ministries’ parliamentarians.

“I have to look at all the parties in the House. I’m not forming a base, there’s no vested interest of mine other than playing a good role for the country,” he said.

Lira compared the government’s relationship with the MDB, PSD and União Brasil to that of Centrão and rejected criticisms that the political group “gives and takes”. “When MDB, PSD and União Brasil occupy the ministries, it is not a take-away or an exchange, but to continue in the same system that the government itself has created or chosen, it becomes a bargaining chip (with Centrão)”, he said.

The mayor also denied that Centrão wants the vacant post of Health Minister Nísia Trindade. “I like Minister Nísia, she always has the utmost affection,” he said. “We are not contesting any ministry,” he said. Lira also said Tourism Minister Daniela Carneiro and her husband, Belford Roxo (RJ) Mayor Wagner Carneiro, better known as Waguinho, were her “two first-time friends”.

As Estadão has shown, however, Centrão wants to command the Ministry of Health and has asked for space for Lira’s group in the government. According to Estadão/Broadcast, the PP, Lira’s party, has changed its strategy to take over the Ministry of Health. According to the report, the party has let the government know that it may sponsor a “technical” name for the portfolio. The ministry was for many years a fiefdom of the PP de Lira, an acronym that today stands in opposition to Lula.

During the interview, Lira stated that he had asked President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) if there was a possibility that the finance minister, Fernando Haddad, to go to the Civil House in place of Minister Rui Costa, and the Executive Secretary of the Portfolio, Gabriel Galípolo, to be Minister of Finance. Lira admitted that he had met Lula a week ago, but that the president rejected the idea. “From there, the talk of the ministry stopped,” Lira said.

According to the speaker of the Chamber, Haddad will remain in charge of the Treasury and Galípolo will be Director of Monetary Policy of the Central Bank (BC), as indicated by the government in the Legislative Branch.

Even so, Lira defended Haddad as a political articulator. “Haddad speaks, negotiates and is frank in conversations; that’s articulation,” she said.

According to the report of Stadium/BroadcastLira dreams of having Haddad, with whom she has a good relationship, at the head of the Civil House and Galípolo would be a name to command the Farm.
