Executive producer and director Shawn Levy states that “there is a clear intention”
Spoilers for the third and fourth seasons below!
“Sometimes I think it’s scary to be honest like that, say how you really feel especially with the people you care about the most because they may not like the truth.”Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) tells his friend Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard). This dialogue that both maintain during the fifth episode of the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things 4’, and that in another context could go through something anecdotal, hides a confession that hints that Joyce’s son (Winona Ryder) is actually homosexual .
Executive producer Shawn Levy has stated in ew that “there aren’t many accidents in ‘Stranger Things,'” and adds: “There is a clear intention and strategy and there is a real reflection on each and every one of the characters. So, if since Volume I you have felt those breadcrumbs in the plot and in the character, it is probably not an accident.” Something to which Schnapp himself has also contributed, who has opined on this assumption throughout the years.
This theory began to gain strength from ‘Stranger Things 3’ in which, by the way, Robin (Maya Hawke), confesses to Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) – watch out for the strange relationship of ‘Stranger Things’ with sex – his homosexuality during a remembered scene in the bathrooms of the cinema. Since then, die-hard fans of the series have being convinced that Robin is not the only gay character in the series.
During the third episode of last season, Will Byers is increasingly frustrated with his best friends because he wants play Dungeons and Dragons with them like they used to, but they only think about the girls, at which point Mike tells him the phrase that gave rise to so many theories: “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls”. The rumors had started.
Noah Schnappwho plays Will, spoke about this scene in an interview in 2020, alluding that depended “on the interpretation”and clarified it in the sense that “I wasn’t ready to grow up and I didn’t want to move on to dating and relationships just yet”
The recent fourth season has only increased these rumors that, perhaps, will be answered in July, in the second part of ‘Stranger Things 4’, perhaps in the future fifth (and last) season or… who knows, maybe in a hypothetical spin-off of the series.
