It was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated cinematic events of 2022. Just six months ago, on December 14th, James Cameron ended more than a decade of waiting and finally offered the public a sequel to his SF landmark, Avatar.
Although the director in 2009 knew how to disturb us by discovering the exotic and bioluminescent world of Pandora, with its fauna, flora and its inhabitants Na’vi, this time he takes us to explore the seabed, introducing us to something new. The inhabitants of this fantastic planet, the water people.
As with his previous film, James Cameron still had to overcome colossal challenges and achieve graphic and technical possibilities to offer us this grand new spectacle. Here are some anecdotes about the filming of this second opus.
did you know
Terminator among the Na’Vis?
In 2013, Arnold Schwarzenegger was rumored to be joining Avatar: The Way of the Water as a bad guy. Rumors are not as decisive as when you know that the actress and James Cameron have collaborated several times (Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and True Lies).
Stronger than Tom Cruise
Actress Kate Winslet managed to stay underwater for 7 minutes and 14 seconds without breathing, better than Tom Cruise, who already managed the impossible mission – holding his breath for six minutes on the set of Rogue Nation.
A giant tank
The logistics team built a massive tank at Manhattan Beach Studios, home to James Cameron and Jon Landau’s production company Lightstorm. It can hold enough water to allow a filmmaker to replicate real ocean conditions. Measuring 36 meters long, 18 wide, 9 deep, and holding nearly 100 cubic meters of water, the huge reservoir served as a “volume” (a term for a performance filming platform) for the underwater scenes.
It’s time to play with seven questions about Avatar: The Waterway. Are you ready for the big dive?
