In recent years, the debate has grown over the possibility of reducing the working week to four days instead of the traditional five. This dramatic shift in work structure for some industries raises important questions about the impacts a shorter workweek can have on productivity, employee health, and the balance between what happens ‘at home’ and ‘at work’ ― or how it was called “personal life” and “professional life” and today we already know that life is one.

One of the main advantages of adopting this model is precisely the possibility of improving this balance between the “two” lives. With one day, employees have more time to devote to activities outside the professional environment, such as spending time with family, pursuing hobbies, exercising and resting. This can lead to people who are happier, more motivated and less prone to burnout or burnout.

Additionally, a shorter workweek may have health benefits. Chronic stress and lack of free time are known to contribute to physical and mental health problems. By allowing an extra day for rest and recovery, there is an opportunity to fully recover from accumulated stress and maintain more balanced health. This can result in fewer sick days, lower turnover, and a healthier, more productive work environment.

How is the company with 4 days of work?

But is it sustainable for all business models? This reduction can pose many challenges for companies. The success of this model, in my opinion, will depend a lot on the culture that the company has.

If there is a culture of trust and freedom, the chances of success increase, if there is a culture of pressure and excessive controls, this implementation can be more difficult.

A major concern is the possible drop in productivity. With fewer hours of work available, there is a risk that fewer tasks will be performed. However, recent studies show that when the team is more satisfied and balanced, their productivity can increase during the short-time period.

Furthermore, the adoption of more efficient technologies and working practices can help compensate for the reduction in working hours.

Another concern is the economic impact of this change. A four-day working week can lead to a reduction in economic output and potentially negatively affect the competitiveness of businesses.

However, it is important to consider the potential long-term benefits, such as reduced costs associated with health care and employee turnover, as well as increased employee satisfaction and engagement, which can translate into greater efficiency and profitability.

Improved health and increased productivity

Studies and tests are still needed to understand the positive and negative impacts of a change, however, I highlight the positive changes we see in other countries that are already adopting this model, including better balance between our “lives”, improved health and increased productivity.

You also need to carefully consider potential challenges, such as the need to adjust workload and economic impact. Careful consideration and a flexible approach are essential when considering implementing a shorter workweek so that benefits can be maximized and challenges mitigated.
