A single call from Tom Cruise made ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ possible, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer tells it along with other curiosities of the film.
‘Top Gun (Idols of the air)‘ arrived in 1986 to become the essence of its own decade. With Tony Scott at the controls, music by Harold Faltermeyer Y Jerry Bruckheimer marking the step from production, it would be difficult to understand the film without taking into account the participation of a Tom Cruise who wanted to eat the world.
35 years after its premiere, ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ (Joseph Kosinski, 2021) reunites the producer and the star again to achieve box office records. and satisfy an audience eager for adrenaline.
“Joe Kosinski had a style guide, a poster, and the title: Top Gun: Maverick,” he explains. Bruckheimer about the entry into the project of the director in an interview with THR. “So he told Tom about the character’s journey and the story he wanted to tell. Tom looked at him, pulled out his phone and called the head of Paramount at the time and said, ‘I want to do another Top Gun.’ And that was it, That’s when everything really started to move.”
Bruckheimer was the Hollywood of the 90s. After heating up as a producer of 80s jewelry like ‘panther’s kiss‘ (Paul Schrader, 1982) and ‘flashdance‘ (Adrian Lyne, 1983), were the blockbusters of ‘Super Detective in Hollywood‘ (Martin Brest, 1984) and ‘Top Gun (Idols of the air)‘ (Tony Scott, 1986) which made him the mythical figure we know today, allowing his signature to be palpable in titles such as ‘Two rogue policemen‘ (Michael Bay, 1995), ‘The rock‘ (Michael Bay, 1996), ‘Con Air (Convicts in the air)‘ (Simon West, 1997), ‘Armageddon‘ (Michael Bay, 1998), ‘60 seconds‘ (Dominic Sena, 2000) and ‘black hawk shot down‘ (Ridley Scott, 2001).
Fortunately for all, the success of the saga ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ in theaters and from ‘ITUC‘ on television didn’t put Bruckheimer out of business and, while less present on the billboard, he has continued to pursue projects like this one’Top Gun: Maverick‘.

“Tom said: ‘I’m not going to do this movie without Val,'” he says about the protagonist’s insistence on the return of Val Kilmer as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky. “When we shot it, it was a very emotional day to have Val there and see him work with Tom after 35 years. These two brilliant actors went all out and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience to have these two gentlemen in front of the cameras again.
On ‘Hold My Hand‘, the theme of Lady Gaga For the film, the producer has nothing but good words: “We played it in Hans Zimmer’s studio and Tom was blown away. Hans loved it so much he said, ‘I’m going to take that tune and use it as a love theme in the movie.'”
“You have a kitchen in your house but you still like to eat out. You have a TV with all the streaming channels but there’s nothing like the group experience,” he says of the current battle over display windows. “Being able to laugh, be scared and feel emotions with a crowd of people is very important. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is the perfect movie for that. It has humor, emotion and fantastic action that is really real. It’s not CGI.”
