37 minutes: One of Netflix’s most anticipated movies will be too short!

Even though his latest film, Asteroid City, is about to hit theaters, Wes Anderson isn’t idle. The American director is already talking in the media about his next project, a feature film about the relationship between father and son.

Meanwhile, Wes Anderson will leave the darkroom for a film that will be available on Netflix. Based on Roald Dahl’s 1977 short story, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is the American director’s most anticipated next project.

By Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Rupert Friend, Richard Ayoade and Ben Kingsley, the beautiful story of Henry Sugar tells the story of a rich man, a man addicted to gambling, interested in the story of a strange patient. Despite his blindfolded eyes from India, he uses his abilities for a very profitable circus.

After discovering the doctors method to take away this man’s sight, Henry Sugar decides to do the same to get the same opportunities and put on a show that will make him a huge amount of money.

Wes Anderson’s Netflix Movie Won’t Be a Feature Film!

in the interview IndieWireWes Anderson explained why this first collaboration with Netflix was the best solution for Roald Dahl’s second adaptation since Fantastic Mr. Fox:

“In my case, it’s a little weird. I knew Roald Dahl before we did Fantastic Mr. Fox. Lindsay Dahl, his widow, 20 years ago when we were doing The Tenenbaums.

I’ve wanted to adapt the Henry Sugar story for years. They put this story aside because I was friends with them. Lindsay passed the torch to Luke, Dali’s grandson. So I was waiting for this story.

But I didn’t know what approach to take. I knew what I loved about the story was his writing, Dali’s words. I had no answer and suddenly I found it. I wasn’t going to make a feature film.

The film lasts about 37 minutes. But by the time I was ready to do it, the Daly family had no rights. They sold the entire business to Netflix.

The platform actually acquired the company that manages the writer’s rights in 2021, after starting a partnership between Netflix and its successors three years earlier. The American giant has already released a new adaptation of Matilda and is developing an animated series drawn from the world of Roald Dahl.

Shot on 16mm, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is the next Roald Dahl story to hit Netflix. Therefore, Wes Anderson had no choice but to partner with the American giant to make his film. “Because it’s a 37-minute film, it was the perfect place to do it because it’s not really a film.”explained the director.

Even if this collaboration with Netflix was a necessity, Wes Anderson remains committed to cinema:

“It’s not a choice between a full theatrical release or a streaming release, because you’d never release a short film like this theatrically. They will have to sell cheaper tickets or take a double feature shot…

I’ve only had good experiences with Netflix, but I’m so happy that Asteroid City is coming to theaters. Focus and Universal do it the true cinema way. I want to show my films so much.”

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar will be available on Netflix next fall.
