Oscar may have a category to honor stuntmen; understand

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which administers the Oscars, is studying the possibility of creating a new category in the award dedicated to stuntmen. Until then, the event, one of cinema’s biggest, never greeted professionals.

The information was confirmed by Chad Stahelski, director of the action franchise. John Wickin an interview with ComicBookFilm.

Stunt category can happen

According to Stahelski, former stunt coordinator and director of the four John Wick (known for its intense action sequences), talks have already begun between the Academy and a group of stunt coordinators.

It’s not yet certain that the category will become a reality, but, according to the director, the discussions have been “incredibly positive, incredibly informative”. He still believes that “for the first time, we made a real move to make that happen.”

Oscar category challenges

Stahelski has always worked in favor of stunts, an area he worked in before taking on the role of director, and he is confident.

For him, the category could become a reality already at the 2024 Oscars or, at the latest, in three or four years.

However, the mode faces challenges on how to reward professionals.

The thing is, we haven’t had any real conversations about determining what to reward. How’s that for the best stuntman? Is it the best choreography? The best action sequence? Best stunt set? Does the stunt coordinator understand this? Does the guy making the joke get it? The martial arts choreographer? The fight choreography? The stuntman? The second unit director? The publisher? Who receives the award? These are all big questions that need to be discussed by intelligent individuals on both sides, the stunt community and the Academy.
