To prevent disease and have a healthy old age, we need to build muscle reserves in our youth.
Collecting savings to have a peaceful retirement is one of the main objectives of those who think about the future. But it is also essential to “build up health” for old age. The functional and sports nutritionist Diogo Cirico, technical manager of Growth Supplements, launches an important warning for those who want to be healthy and independent in the so-called old age.
“People should be muscle sparing, that is, working their bodies from a young age to reach old age with an amount of muscle mass considered healthy,” he comments.
The claim of the professional is based on a series of scientific studies which reveal that resistance exercises (those that use weights and offer resistance to the muscle, such as bodybuilding, calisthenics, crossfit or exercises with elastic bands) are powerful weapons to prevent a series of illnesses .
Strengthen the whole body
OR latest studycarried out by researchers from the Federal Universities of São Paulo (Unifesp) and São Paulo (USP) and published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience, revealed that the practice of physical exercises against resistance prevents and delays the onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms.
The sports nutritionist says that when we do bodybuilding, our musculoskeletal system works and communicates with the other systems: endocrine, immune, liver, kidney, cardiovascular and central nervous system.
“Bodybuilding strengthens our whole body, not just the muscles. It improves the immune system, increasing protection against various types of diseases: obesity, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, autoimmune diseases and diseases of the central nervous system, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s,” he comments.

Bodybuilding is essential for health in old age
In short, the nutritionist explains that bodybuilding regulates the system that controls blood pressure and increases the peripheral absorption of glucose, independently of insulin work, therefore the activity is indicated for those with diabetes.
“In the case of diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, which are linked to the antioxidant capacity of the immune system, bodybuilding improves the immune system’s ability to fight free radicals,” he comments.
Life quality
As we reach old age, our anabolic hormone levels, our nutrient absorption rate, and our protein synthesis capacity decrease.
“So older people lose physical autonomy because they don’t have a good amount of muscle mass, so you have to start training early,” he says.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also recommends resistance exercise to improve balance, posture and prevent falls. “Many elderly people suffer fractures when they fall due to the bone demineralization process. Bodybuilding improves calcium metabolism and increases bone mineralization, therefore reducing fractures,” he comments.
Additionally, there is a significant improvement in disposition and quality of life as a whole. “Bodybuilding improves the production of hormones related to well-being (catecholamines, adrenaline, noradrenaline). I also have neurotransmitter production, like dopamine and serotonin,” he adds.
