Movie Quiz: It’s a Remake! But what movie?

When The Toy was released in 1976, the film’s lead actor Pierre Richard and director Francis Weber were not completely strangers to each other, as the latter had written the screenplays for two huge popular successes that largely helped launch the actor’s career: Le. Grand Blond with Black Shoes and its sequel Le Retour du Grand Blond.

Francis Weber’s first film behind the camera tells the story of François Perrin, a journalist who, fearing to lose his job, agrees to become a “plaything” for his boss’s son. An initially strained relationship develops between a young journalist and a capricious child with tyrannical tendencies. But François slowly takes a liking to the young man, in whom he finds some trouble, mainly due to his social and family environment.

Almost forty years later, this film, which has become a classic of French comedy, will be eligible for a remake in 2022 with the release of New Toy (to be broadcast tonight on CANAL +). The play features filmmaker James Huth, who is mostly known for bringing the character of Brice de Nice to the screen with Jean Dujardin.

In the main role, it is Jamel Debouze who will have the difficult task of replacing Pierre Richard, his character is no longer a journalist, but a security guard. As for the father of the child at the center of the film, it is Daniel Auteuil (who himself had already played the role of François Pignon in Le Placard), who takes over the role from a few decades earlier by Michel Bouquet.
