According to information from the Brazilian Association of Vaccination Clinics (ABCVAC), the immunizer was approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) in March, as providing broad protection against dengue: efficacy against dengue for those who had no previous infection with the virus was 66.2%. For people who had previously had the infection, it was 76.1%.
In practice, the formula of the Takeda Pharma Ltda company consists of four different serotypes of the virus that causes the disease. Tecnocold Vacinas, a distributor specializing in vaccines, which is part of the Viveo ecosystem, is one of the companies that will distribute the vaccine.
“As an ecosystem, we are always looking for innovation for the sector. That is why we are investing more and more in immunization. We started distributing the first dengue vaccine and now we have a new vaccine. We are part of this trajectory and we want to participate to the reduction and control of dengue”, says the manager of Tecnocold Vacinas, André Almeida.
How much will the dengue vaccine cost?
The dengue vaccine is expected to cost between R$350 and R$500, depending on the state, according to a note from the ABCVAC. In São Paulo, for example, the maximum consumer price (PMC) authorized by Anvisa for clinics is R$ 379.40.
“Clinics must use this parameter in the composition of their final price, which also includes treatment, screening, vaccination record analysis, pre and post vaccine orientation, as well as all the support patients need to properly inform themselves on the issue of vaccination “, points out ABCVAC.
Who can get the dengue vaccine?
Anvisa says the vaccine is indicated for children over 4, adolescents and adults up to age 60, unlike the previously approved vaccine, Dengvaxia, which can only be used by those who have already had dengue.

It is worth adding that the new vaccine is administered subcutaneously in a two-dose schedule, with an interval of three months between applications.
Is there a cure for dengue?
According to Amanda Alecrim, physician, regional representative of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations, Dengue is an infectious diseasetransmitted by Aedes Aegypti mosquitoand is the most widespread urban arbovirus in the Americas, mainly in Brazil, causing a great impact on collective health.
“There are no drugs to cure the disease, we can only control the vector with sanitary measures, and now we can count on a strong and effective tool to protect ourselves against this virus, a vaccine that will protect against the 4 dengue serotypes, which can be used both for those who have already had the disease and for those who have not yet had contact with the virus”, explains the doctor.
The specialist reiterates that the main symptoms of dengue are similar to those of other viral diseases, including: sudden onset of high fever, which can be accompanied by headache, muscle and joint pain, weakness and pain behind the eyes. “It is important to remember that it is a disease that can evolve with seriousness, attention must be paid to warning signs such as abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the mucous membranes and drowsiness”, he concludes. Amanda warns that a doctor’s prescription is needed to get the vaccine.
