The trading window moved more than a billion dollars worth of contracts in the first few hours.
The first night of the free agency trading window for the 23-24 NBA season brought good moves to market this preseason. Without many big-name teams to contest, it was the role players the most important pieces in those first hours. The first twenty-six contracts, closed in the first hour, exceeded the value of one billion dollars.
The two teams that moved the most in this first window were the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers. And they were excellent moves! The Suns got two major renovations like Josh Okogie’s and parts insured to meet the bank’s needs that won’t have as much value due to the team’s core quartet’s big contracts.
The Lakers almost walked away with a perfect night. The team managed to keep Rui Hachimura on the team and rounded out its roster with Taurean Prince and Cam Reddish, as well as securing the Miami Heat’s latest point guard, Gabe Vincent, on a three-year deal. The Lakers still need some moves for next season in the NBA beyond the contracts of Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell, which should be closed in the free agency days.
The biggest contracts of the night were from players who stayed on their franchises. Jerami Grant signed a $160 million (R$766.4 million in current conversion) contract, while Desmond Bane signed his full rookie extension with the Memphis Grizzlies for $206 million (R$991.5 million) and Tyrese Haliburton also signed his rookie high extension with the Indiana Pacer for US$260 million (R$1,245.3 billion).
