Biarritz: How to Have Sex was awarded twice at the first Nouvelles Vagues festival

The first edition of Nouvelles Vagues published the prize list. On the eve of the 5th day of films and meetings, tomorrow Sunday 2 July 2023, the closing ceremony took place at the Théâtre de la Gare du Midi in Biarritz.

“You, the community, were there, filling the hall with thirst and curiosity“, emphasized Sandrine Brauer. In front of a full house of 1,400 people, the winners received a trophy designed by Bulli School students.

Echoing the current situation, before awarding the prizes, the jury, in the voice of actress Lina Khudri, read an extract from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables:

They wanted the end of oppression, the end of tyranny, the end of the sword, labor for men, education for children, social comfort for women, liberty, equality, fraternity, bread for all, ideas for all, Edenization. world, progress; And this holy, good and sweet, advance, was brought to the limit, they claimed themselves terribly, half-naked, stick in hand, roar in mouth. They were wild, yes; But the savages of civilization. They declared their right furiously; They wanted, with trembling and fear, to force mankind into heaven. They looked like barbarians and were saviors. They demanded light with a night mask. (…) As for us, if we had to choose between the barbarians of civilization and the civilized of barbarians, we would choose barbarians. But, thank heaven, another choice is possible. There is no need for a steep drop, neither forward nor backward. Neither despotism nor terrorism. We want gradual progress.”

The jury was chaired by Saeed Roustaee, surrounded by Lyna Khoudri, Dali Benssalah, Camila Morrone, Noah Centineo, Francesca Scorsese, Léo Walk.

For reference, the bias of the Biarritz International Film Festival – Nouvelles vague is to tell the story of youth and build on its vision through a unique proposal: films that represent the stories of youth, judged by a jury of artists under 35 years old. International jury of students of major film schools.

Nouvelles vague aims to highlight the young generation, its vision and its power, where the future takes root. Youth is the future written in the present, and during the festival, the present will merge with the future. The stories of heroes aged 12 to 35 were at the center of the program and the professional aspects of the festival. The trophy presented to the winners was designed by Ecole Boulle students.

Enlightening young people, so that they in turn can enlighten us with the works of both recognized and prominent directors and revealing the faces of tomorrow, this is the challenge of the Biarritz International Film Festival, the reason for its existence.

In the framework of the final session, the film Marguerite’s Theorem by Anna Novion was screened.

The second edition of Nouvelles vague has already been announced with new dates from June 17 to June 23, 2024.
