Will The Witcher season 3 bring Henry Cavill’s role to a dignified end?

The Netflix adaptation of The Witcher enters its third season with a big problem to solve: Henry Cavill will leave the role of Geralt, protagonist of the series, in the fourth season. That said, was the actor’s move to Liam Hemsworth justified? Will Cavill’s journey as the Witcher of Rivia come to a dignified end? Well, in the following paragraphs we will analyze a little this first part of the third season of The Witcher.

Plot of the third season of The Witcher (SPOILERS!)

The start of season three hasn’t brought much change: everyone on the continent is still hell-bent on finding Ciri (Freya Allan), a young princess with mysterious powers who may hold the key to uniting a vast and violent world. Kings, wizards, elves – they all want to find her for their own nefarious reasons. Despite this, she finds herself in a rather cozy situation, living with Geralt and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra).

Still on the run, on the move at the slightest sign of danger, they’ve also settled into a comfortable family routine, sharing meals and doing the dishes, while Yenn – who has finally regained her magic after being tragically deprived last season – seeks to teach Ciri to control your powers. After two seasons of nothing but death and betrayal, it’s refreshing to see the three of them living a quiet, happy life.

But, of course, peace doesn’t last long in The Witcher. External forces force the small family nucleus to break up. Yenn takes Ciri to the Aretuza Magic Academy hoping to help her learn and keep her safe, while Geralt pursues Rience (Chris Fulton), a fire-wielding wizard who is after Ciri at the behest of a mysterious benefactor. There’s still a fair amount of political maneuvering and treachery to go along with.

This season, we see a notable change in Jaskier (Joey Batey), who returns to being a free spirit who cracks a lot of jokes, often at the wrong time. This time he has a rivalry with another bard and an intense crush on a prince. He looks like Dandelion again, despite the hair and eyeliner.

What we know about the end of Henry Cavill’s Geralt

While there’s a lot going on, volume one of the new season is essentially about one thing: revealing who the new big bad is. The first batch of episodes concludes with a party, which is viewed from multiple perspectives, forcing you, along with Geralt and Yenn, to sift through the lies, detours and illusions as a band sings “All is not as it seems.” The big reveal of the secret villain was truly amazing.

The producers of The Witcher have said that Cavill’s transition to Hemsworth will be “pretty smooth”. However, this season is a major send-off for this version of the character and is setting up this version of Geralt for a big showdown. At the same time, this season is also something of a return to form, bringing The Witcher back to the things that make it unique: it’s funny, gory, and sexy.

Either way, we’ll have to wait until the second half of the season to draw solid conclusions about the switch from Cavill to Hemsworth in the role of Geralt (and whether it will be adequately justified). However, the path taken so far is promising and the series looks more engaging and interesting than the second season.
