Barbie is banned in Vietnam: why won’t the movie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling come out?

“It’s Barbie Mermaid”, “This barbie is a lawyer”, “This Barbie is the President”…these were some of the slogans we could read on the character posters of Greta Gerwig’s much-anticipated movie, which caused a stir on the Internet.

But no trace of a “This barbie is not allowed to be released in Vietnam”, which would surprise more than one viewer. Yet this is what the feature film has recently experienced varietyWhich leads to geopolitical and diplomatic explanations.

One of Barbie’s scenes does show a line in nine strokes. Consider the indefinite demarcation that delimits the part of the South China Sea over which China claims territorial sovereignty. which Vietnam sees as a violation of its own.

UNCHARTED, Barbie: Same fight

Although unknown to some of the general public, the nine-strike line, which was unanimously declared invalid by the United Nations in 2016 (which China still disputes), has raised concerns over other feature films in recent years: Dreamworks’ animated film Abominable, pulled. A week after being released in theaters, or the adaptation of the video game Uncharted.

If the screen presence of this delimitation could be seen as a way for Barbie, which has become a key sector in Hollywood, to open the doors to Chinese theaters, it is not, because there are no plans for a local release.

On the other hand, one might wonder if Greta Gerwig and Warner would go so far as to remove this supposedly problematic element from the scene in question to allow Barbie to appear in Vietnam, where Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were used to the film. Expected to leave on July 21st.
