After two live-action films released in the early 2000s, Scooby-doo returns to theaters 20 years later as an animated feature. Titled Scooby!, this project serves as a prequel. The story follows Sam and Scooby-Doo’s encounter with three prominent investigators, Fred, Vera and Daphne. Together they form the Mystère et Cie team.
Despite the difficult context, which was heavily affected by the pandemic, the film collected more than 700,000 admissions in France. Good luck, away from the figures on American soil. Still, the sequel is on, Scoob! Holiday Haunt. The author of the second opus is Tony Cervone, the director of the first part.
As production progresses and the feature film is almost complete, tragedy disrupts the teams’ work: in early August 2022, Warner Bros. Will cancel two of his movies, Batgirl and the sequel to Scooby! If many media outlets are covering the cancellation of the DC Comics blockbuster, Scooby! It goes quite unnoticed.
Immediately after the announcement, Tony Cervone responded on his Instagram account: “I’m afraid it’s true. The film is almost complete and looks great. My heart broke even more.” Despite this cancellation, the screenwriter made it known that he still continues to work on music: “What do you do when your movie is canceled but you’ve already paid the studio and the musicians? You record the damn music!“

Will we see a sequel to this one day? Nothing less certain unless Warner studios decide otherwise. The film is indeed finished and its co-director Bill Haller is not giving up hope. In a tweet posted on December 6, he explained: “Last week was supposed to be a Scooby release! Holiday Haunt. It’s the perfect Scooby-doo. I know fans will love it once it gets the release it deserves.”
