Oh my god! here we go again The summer musical Mamma Mia! Will he have the honor of a third film?

While Mamma Mia! Here we go again with the sequel and prequel to Phyllida Lloyd’s 2008 film, which will be broadcast tonight on TF1’s Films series. We analyze a possible third part of the saga inspired by the hit musical.

In 2008, Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Kristin Baranski, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters and Dominic Cooper contributed the song to the film adaptation of the hit musical Mamma Mia!.

Based on ABBA’s hits, the musical was created in 1999 by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, both members of the Swedish band. With more than 65 million viewers worldwide, the musical is a real success. 10 years after its inception, the director of the show, Phyllida Lloydgoes behind the camera to make an adaptation deemed either “terribly kitsch” (according to TéléCinéObs) or an antidote to darkness (according to 20 minutes).

Oh my god!

The action of the feature film takes place in 1999 on the beautiful (fictional) Greek island of Kalokairi. Donna (Streep) runs a hotel where her daughter Sophie (Seyfried) and her fiance Skye (Cooper) plan to get married. Sophie nervously posts three invitations to three very different men, one of whom is her father. Three men from three corners of the earth prepare to return to the island – and to the woman – who bewitched them 20 years ago.

With its fascinating scenery, novelties and catchy music, the film is a success. With a budget of 52 million dollars, Oh my god! It brought in nearly $610 million at the international box office and attracted more than 1.5 million viewers to French cinemas.

In July 2018, Ol Parker staged his second opus under the name Oh my god! Here we go again. After the first part, the feature film features many flashbacks that allow us to return to Donna’s youth, played by Lily James.

In this opus, Sophie sets out to open her own hotel on the island of Kalokairi and finds comfort with her mother’s friends, who died a few years earlier. The latter advises him to follow the example of Donna’s career.

On the casting side, Cheri and Andy Garcia join the small cast. Shot on the island of Vis on a budget of $75 million in Croatia, not Greece, the film grossed $402 million internationally and drew 735,883 in French theaters.

The return of Meryl Streep

Last May, Judy Kramer, producer of the musical and two feature films, revealed that she was trying to mount a third installment and return Meryl Streep.

The latter said thus Deadline :”The project is at an early stage. I don’t want to go too far, but I know it’s enough to make a trilogy. There’s a story to tell and I think Meryl Streep should come back – and if the script is good, she would, I think, because she really enjoyed playing Donna.

At the moment, nothing is official about Mamma Mia 3, but the project is under study. If Meryl Streep agrees to return, so the plot of the film should develop here we go! Because Sophie explains there that her mother died.

This isn’t the first time the producer has talked about a third opus after 2020, he also explained that a third Mamma Mia film will see the light of day “one day”.

And wait, Judy Kramer has teamed up with ITV for the show Oh my god! I have a dream. This 8-episode talent competition will find 2 future stars of the London musical Mamma Mia!
